The Sea Cow is painted as an underwater ocean scene, complete with ocean floor, plant life, shells, and multicolored fish. Since manatees are also called “sea cows”, the artists thought the connection would be obvious. They decided to paint their cow including lots of manatees in their design in the hope that people will see the beauty of them and the need to preserve the docile animal.
The group of students who helped design and paint “The Sea Cow” are a particularly talented group of young artists at Valley West Elementary School. Brandy Watkins is the art teacher who has taught art to all grade levels over the past 20 years. She also has shown her own work in exhibitions throughout Texas.
