Harris the cow sports oil black skin covered in silver polka dots. These spots expand and change color to guide one to information that Harris holds inside. The polka dots add an element of playfulness while accentuating Harris’ full-figured contours. His carriage is adorned with 16 brass rings (eyepieces) that present images of Houston. Around each eyepiece is a fact about Houston and a shiny button that lights the picture inside. Go ahead and push Harris’ buttons.
Harris was conceived as a big toy. His spotted surface gives Harris a pop-art feel, creating an abstract image of crude oil black with swirling iridescent colors. An oil soaked cow pays homage to the heritage of Houston as an oil town.
The images and descriptions add a level of interaction and discovery for the viewer as well as insight into some of the things that make Houston unique. Harris reveals some of Houston’s best qualities and most interesting features. While Houston will be a temporary home to cattle during the CowParade Houston, the City of Houston itself will permanently reside in Harris the cow, creating a bovine picture post-card of some of the things that makes Houston great.
