Fiestas Patrias celebrates Mexico with colorful imagery and portraits of Mexican and Mexican-American historical figures and community leaders. Fiestas Patrias refers to the month long celebration in September of Mexico’s battle for Independence from Spanish rule in the early 1800’s. The artist says, “I hope Fiestas Patrias encourages young people to explore the history of Mexico and appreciate the cultural diversity that makes America unique.”

Artist Jose Figueroa was raised in Houston, TX and graduated from Rice University with a triple major in Art, Psychology, and Economics. Figueroa describes himself as “a new media artist, incorporating digital imaging, video and audio into site specific multi-media installations.” His work has been exhibited at major Houston venues such as Diverseworks, and Lawndale Art Center, and he’s lectured at the Glassell School of Art. Figueroa’s “Maria y Jose” a digital painting commissioned by the Houston downtown Management District, is permanently displayed in the Theater District. Figueroa is a recipient of the 2001 Individual Artist grant from the Cultural Arts Council of Houston/Harris County.


This cow was sold in Flight 6 of the internet auction hosted by Amazon.com that ran from December 20, 2001 to January 8, 2002.
